Between heavy coastal rains, freeze-thaw cycles, and some of the highest storm frequency in Canada, trees in Halifax deal with more stress than most homeowners realize.

This guide covers exactly how Halifax’s climate affects your trees, the most common problems we see locally, and what you can do to reduce the risk of costly damage or removals.

  • Frost cracks – vertical splits in the bark caused by the rapid contraction of the outer wood during sudden temperature drops
  • Sunscald – dead bark on the sunny south or southwest side of the trunk, where winter sun warms the bark during the day and rapid freezing at night kills the tissue
  • Frost heaving – soil expansion from freezing pushes roots upward and out of the ground, destabilizing younger trees and exposing roots to drying and cold damage
  • Winter desiccation – frozen ground prevents water uptake while wind and winter sun continue to dry out branches and foliage, causing browning and dieback that appears in spring

  • Wrapping young or thin-barked trees (maples, birch, cherry) with tree wrap or burlap in late fall insulates the bark against rapid temperature swings. Remove wrapping in the spring to prevent moisture and pest issues underneath. It can also prevent wildlife from chewing on the bark 
  • Apply mulch (5–10 cm) around the root zone in early fall before the ground freezes – this buffers soil temperature and reduces the severity of freeze-thaw movement.

Summer Heat and Drought Stress 

In July and August, dry stretches occur regularly — and trees in exposed locations near pavement, in restricted root zones, or in compacted soil feel it most. Summer Heatwaves and Risk of Wildfires

Heatwaves also increase wildfire risk, especially when dry weather lasts for weeks and trees, grass, and forest debris lose moisture. 

Halifax homeowners saw how serious this can become during the May 2023 Upper Tantallon and Hammonds Plains wildfire, which displaced more than 16,000 residents at its peak and burned through hundreds of hectares, including homes, forested areas, and community infrastructure.

Anthracnose 

One of the most common fungal issues in the NS climate. Anthracnose is a group of related fungal diseases that cause dark, irregular spots or blotches along leaf veins, often leading to early leaf drop. It spreads most aggressively during cool, wet springs, which are common in HRM. Maples, oaks, dogwoods, and ash are particularly susceptible. Anthracnose rarely kills a healthy tree outright, but repeated infections weaken it over time and increase its susceptibility to other stress factors. 

Powdery Mildew 

Recognizable by the white, powdery coating that appears on leaves and stems. Powdery mildew is common in humid environments, especially where air circulation is poor. It affects a wide range of trees, including maples, oaks, lilacs, beeches, and crabapples. It weakens trees by interfering with photosynthesis, but it is rarely fatal on its own to an otherwise healthy tree. 

Root Rot 

Root rot develops when soil stays waterlogged for extended periods – a real risk in Nova Scotia’s low-lying lots and clay-heavy soils, or anywhere irrigation is overdone. The fungus attacks the root system, cutting off the tree’s ability to take up water and nutrients. By the time symptoms like yellowing leaves, crown dieback, mushrooms at the base appear, the damage underground is often already extensive. Root rot is difficult to reverse once established.

Fall in Halifax brings increased storm activity, and Nova Scotia’s storm frequency means trees take repeated hits over the years. 

Halifax doesn’t just deal with regular storms, it’s also been hit by some of the most significant hurricanes in Canadian history.
